About The Project
This three minute animation, created as part of my self initiated brief, was a combination of model making and digital compositing. All elements were hand made, photographed against a bluescreen and then put together digitally in After Effects. I really wanted to build on a previous animation I made and learn After Effects in the process, whilst keeping with the hand made aesthetic I practised in the original.
Each planet started as a polystyrene sphere which was then coated in paper mâchéd, sculpted with layers of cardboard, then paper mâchéd again before I painted it and added modelling flock and model railway trees for the planets that needed it. Then using a custom rotating base I would take a picture every couple of degrees (the number of degrees depended on the rotational speed) against a bluescreen. Taking these photos into Photoshop I would removed the base and colour correct where necessary. Using Premiere Pro I created a stop motion comp and used Chroma key to cut out the background, I would take this comp into After Effects to animate it with the other planets. Then the After Effects comp would be taken back into Premiere Pro to add audio and final export.
I took about 5000 photos for this animation. The music is Mílanó by Sigur Rós.
